Ever since its inception, television has supplied the entire world with all kinds of entertainment. From the early days of Howdy Doody, to the impressive, special effects-laden sitcoms of today, television has been a staple of culture and entertainment since the very beginning. And in order for there to be a whole world of television programming, there lies an often unseen world of program creation.
Actors must be convincing and be able to fully immerse themselves in a role. Directors must plan out and oversee the program recording process. Good writers need an extensive imagination as well as the ability to use it in forming genuinely entertaining stories and scenarios. Every facet of a television program or event requires effective professionals.
In 1929, a group of enthusiasts and industry experts decided that such talents and work deserved commemoration and praise. The very first awards for on-screen entertainment were then given out in recognition for industry accomplishments at the time. This was the very first Academy Awards.
This celebration of accomplishment spread over the years, in direct proportion to television industry growth and popularization. What was once just a single ceremony, turned into other ceremonies, different awards, and different divisions of the industry being celebrated. Today, we have an entire cable TV award season. No matter who you are, you’ve probably heard of some of the most celebrated of awards and ceremonies of the season.
The Emmys
“The Emmys” refers to the prestigious ceremony in which awards are given to members of various areas of the television industry. The actual physical award is an “Emmy Award.” Sports programming, news, documentaries, excellence in daytime and primetime entertainment, and technological achievements are all venues celebrated by The Emmys.
The Golden Globe Awards
The Golden Globe is an award given to celebrate greatness in TV and film. The awards can be given to domestic and foreign products of film and TV, the only requirement: pure excellence. The platform of judgement on the subject comes via the 93 esteemed members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, or HFPA.
Guild Awards
With each of the many disciplines involved in TV entertainment production, there is an associated guild, or organization. The guild awards are individual awards and ceremonies hosted by and for each individual discipline. The Screen Actors Guild has awards for its affiliated professionals. The Directors Guild and Writers Guild are similar examples, each having its own awards ceremonies and process.
The Oscars
The Oscars awards ceremony is one the most prestigious and well-known in the whole world. Also known as The Academy Awards, this ceremony gives awards to acknowledge accomplishments in film. There are many categories addressed within the awards, but all have undergone the tedious judgement of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or AMPAS. Anyone and everyone involved or interested in television or film entertainment lock eyes on this one.
There are certainly many other various awards and ceremonies, but these are some of the real, big-hitters of the season. Watch and see who has accomplished the greatest feats this year, and who will be so recognized and awarded. Get ready, the buzz has already begun.
